All the TV That’s Fit to Stream
Welcome back to streaming variability, a newsletter all about tv and what’s worth watching written by some random idiot on the internet!
Quick Thoughts
Real life has been a real pain as of late, but there has still been some great TV allowing me an hour or two to sink into the couch and disassociate from the jobby-job. Barry continues to be the best thing airing, imo, but Succession isn’t far behind as we get ready for the Logan Roy funeral coming up on Sunday.
The New Stuff this week is a bit lighter plus we’ve got three shows wrapping up their first seasons in Mrs. Davis, The Big Door Prize, and Royal Crackers, which will help cool off The Schedule a bit to make things a little more manageable around here.
The most important thing on TV right now though, is clearly the NBA Playoffs as the Conference Finals kick-off tonight, with the Lakers @ Nuggets, following the NBA Draft Lottery where (I hope) the Bulls will defy the odds and land a top three pick 🤞(but probably not…)
New Stuff
High Desert (Apple)
Has some In Plain Sight meets Perpetual Grace meets Hacks type vibes, maybe…? Some of that is probably a stretch, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Patricia Arquette is hit or miss for me and I’m not hearing great things, but I’m still excited to give it a look. First three episodes hit Apple on Wednesday.
Primo (Freevee)
Shea Serrano and Mike Schur. If you don’t know those names you should. You’ve definitely watched Schur’s shows before and Shea Serrano is a stellar writer, previously at The Ringer. The entire season drops on Freevee Friday.
Spy/Master (HBO)
I don’t know if I’ll actually find time to get around to this, but it looks pretty great. Spy/Master is a spy thriller set during the Cold War with the KGB and double-agent intrigue in Berlin. It’s a Romanian production too so if you are looking for more global viewing, this will be right up your alley.
Ghosts of Beirut (Showtime)
Another spy thriller series, this one is a 4-part limited series set in the Middle East, spanning two decades during the CIA and Mossad’s man-hunt for the terrorist Imad Mughniyeh.
