Well I knocked out two top ten lists and quickly disappeared, let’s see if I can get a few more out before I disappear again since we are more than a month into the year already.
I’ve been putting off sending my top ten movies list because I was trying to squeeze a few more in, but at this point it’s basically a wrap. I did just get a chance to see Nightmare Alley, which is right on the tail end of maybe making a # 9 or 10 spot, but there are still so many more I want to see…
Music doesn’t have that problem anymore. One can stream anything at anytime. It also means I don’t always follow through because it’s **too** accessible and easy to add random crap to my library… I go into waves of listening to new music, to listening only to old stuff, and then going weeks without listening to a single song because podcasts dominate the AirWaves. With that being said, there were still a bunch of albums I enjoyed, but ultimately don’t have too much to say so I’ll keep this brief. Let’s go.
10) Nine by Sault
Not a fan that I can’t actually listen to this anymore, but it was my intro to Sault and I really dug jamming to this in the car.
9) Shadow Planet by The Cotton Modules
As a Robin Sloan super fan, I give everything he writes (or does) a change and this fell directly in my lane as an ambient expiremental electronic album.
8) Jubilee by Japanese Breakfast
7) Little Oblivions by Julien Baker
Both of these albums were great additions to each artists discographies. While I was familiar with both, I’ve never really gone deep into their music so this was a great start to get listening.
6) Hey What by Low
Four of the albums on my list follow a pretty similar pattern and vibe. This is the first of those four, the other three top the list.
5) Collapsed in Sunbeams by Arlo Parks
A beautiful, soulful, upbeat record. Arlo knocks this debut album out of the park.
4) Sound Ancestors by Madlib
As a whole album, it’s not as complete as a lot of the other stuff here, but Road of the Lonely Ones might just be the best song of the year.
3) Cavalcade by black midi
2) For the First Time by Black Country, New Road
1) Bright Green Field by Squid
As I mentioned earlier, my top three all land in a very similar aesthetic of music that just fit how I felt and what I wanted to listen to over the last year. Black Country, New Road already have a new record out this year, but I look forward to more from the others, especially Squid.
That’s it, I promised brief. So I’m done. Hopefully we will talk soon about Movies, and perhaps, maybe even Beer, Books, and Podcasts. Until then, stay sane.
